A Must Read - 5 Very Important Topics

This morning I while eating my breakfast I turned on the TV
and started watching the episode of
I Dream Of Jeannie
where Jeannie catches the Alibaba Flu
and kisses Major Nelson
just before he gets in his spaceship and heads to the moon.
She kept blinking him back and forth from spaceship to home
to try to nurse him back to health.
I was so afraid that the other astronaut
was going to realize what was happening.
It stressed me out some.

After I bought my new towels at Target yesterday,
I threw them in the washer and dryer and this huge wad of lint
was in my filter.

I think it's pretty.
I took a picture of it.
Actually, I took 6 pictures of it.
And I edited this one.

I edited a picture of dryer lint.

After writing my post yesterday about
how I don't like Yoga,
I thought about that.
I decided it was probably because I don't know
how to still my mind.
My wheels are always spinning.

So I decided to set my stop watch
to 5 minutes and just sit with my eyes closed
and try to still my mind
and find my inner being
and possibly solve the problem of world hunger.

While I was lying there
taking deep cleansing breaths,
my dog came up and licked me inside my mouth.
Meditation and enlightenment are not for the faint of heart.

World hunger remains a problem.

I do spend a lot of time thinking about ways to
save the world though.
If our overflowing landfills are such a problem
why can't we just drill a hole to the core of the Earth
where it's really hot and burny
and just throw our trash in there?

My friend Connie thinks that's a stupid idea
as it would allow all the toxic gases to escape from
the Earth's core.
I think Connie thinks too much.
We should just do it and see what happens.

I think we should stop housing and feeding all death row inmates.
We should save them all up until we have a
spaceship full of them
(to save on gas, of course)
and drop them off on the moon
with enough oxygen and to last a month
and let them figure it all out.

We fly in that general vicinity anyway
so why not pull a trailer full of them
behind the spaceship
and unload it on the moon?

I'm chock full of great ideas.

Laraine:
If your brother the congressman would like to
have a little sit down to discuss any of my ideas,
I think I could fit him in next Tuesday.

This is Still Not a Cooking Blog

Or a Diet Blog
Or a Decorating Blog
Or a Crafting Blog
Or a Sewing Blog
Or a Family Blog

I'm not sure what it is.
But thanks for checking in
to see what absurd things I'm up to today.

I made this:
And know what?
I liked it a really really lot.

Cauliflower crust.
Genn said it was good and she doesn't lie.
I don't think.
I'm not sure.
I only met her once
but her pants weren't on fire or anything.

(No mas pantelones)
That commercial is funny, I don't care who you are.

The recipe for the crust can be found here.
The only things I did differently were:
I only used half of the cheese called for.
And I only cooked the cauliflower for 6 minutes.

My first batch of cauliflower was cooked for 8 minutes
and it turned to brown cripsies in the microwave.
So I started over and did 6 minutes.

Also, she made it sound like you could
put it on the cookie sheet with your hands.
Mine was more like a batter and poured out.

Either way, it was very good.
I put basil, a little homemade marinara,
mushrooms and tomatoes on mine.

Let's move on to something else.

In my last post I spoke about the
Yoga lesson my sister gave me and how I enjoyed it.
Yes, that's me, why do you ask?

Now I have changed my mind as I am wont to do.

Yoga is a dumb ass exercise for people
that like to move really slow and be relaxed
and get all bendy.

I like to move around like a flea on crack.
Hopping from task to task.
Yoga is boring.
And the name Yoga is stupid.
I shall not speak of it again on this blog.

Today I went to Target to buy some washcloths,
towels and new Tupperware-like food holder thingies.
34 pieces for $15

I used my Target credit card to get the 5% off,
then after I paid I walked over to customer service and
paid off that amount in cash.

Do you think that's unethical?

Never mind, don't answer that.
I'm not going to stop doing it.

And since I believe that every post
should have a minimum of four pictures,
I leave you with this one
since my children refuse to give me grand kids.

She misses her Aunt Kelly
who rubbed her head,
spoke soft words to her,
and fed her from the table.

It's Only My Opinion But Only My Opinion Counts.

I am the queen of Buyer's Remorse.
If I need something new and it happens to be a little pricey
I will spend hours researching reviews
and consumer reports.

I'll comparison shop using Amazon, Ebay,
and any site that may give me an edge.
And then I make my purchase and will immediately lose sleep
for the next several nights.

Spending large amounts of money makes me want to vomit.
I like money.
I like my money to be in my bank.
Where I can look at it virtually through my bank's website.
And I like to transfer it back and forth from savings to checking,
from checking to savings,
just because it's fun.

I like to go to my bank
because the people are nice,
they know me by name,
and they give me free coffee and suckers.

What I'm saying here is,
it's hard to get me to part with my money.
There is just so little of it so it is precious to me.

However,
that said,
there are some things that I will never regret purchasing.
I have found that these items
have been well worth the money spent.

My super heavy extra large cast iron skillet.
Cornbread, chicken, pizza, need I say more?
Get a good one and take care of it.
It will last you all your days.
Until death do you part.

A microplane zester.
Not a pricey item but one that I can't believe I went so long without.

Wen Cleansing Conditioner.
I bit the bullet and tried it.
I NEVER order anything off the television.
Ever!
So I went to Ebay and bought Wen.
Because I only purchase off the internet using Paypal.
I can't tell you what a difference this made
from the very first time I used it.
I will never use shampoo again.

FoodSaver.
Saves Foods.
I use it almost every day.
If it weren't ugly I'd keep it on the counter.

My Kitchen Aid Mixer.
Pricey?
Yes.
Worth it?
Indubitably.

And my Cuisinart Immersion Blender.
I don't think I truly lived until I bought this.

And that's about it.
Everything else I own I regret.
Except for my dog.
And my husband.
I own them both but they were free.

If I'd had to pay for either,
I probably would have checked the reviews more carefully.

Sometimes I Do Things

If you know me at all,
this post will not surprise you in the least.

Of all the things I am known for,
the most prevailing would be my forgetfulness
and the rate at which my mind is decaying.

I am well known for my
consistent inability to remember anything.

Like my anniversary.
And my husband's birthday.
And to take the garlic bread out of the oven before it burns.

Mmmmm, garlic bread.

What was I talking about?
Oh, forgetfulness.
And Mental Decay.

So it shouldn't surprise you that
this morning when my washing machine did it's
little "ting-a-ling" thing
and I went to move the clothes into the dryer
that I found I had never put the clothes in the washer
in the first place.

On the up-side,
my washer is squeaky clean.

Having said that,
one could only assume that I had lost my mind once again
after seeing this picture.

On the contrary,
I did this outlandish thing on purpose.
And here's why.

I bought these brand new Brighton Shoes
at a consignment shop for $6.00.
Leather and velvet, yes please!

They were a little snug in the toes
and at the balls of my chubby little feet.
But they were $6.00
and they were Brighton's!
So I bought them and tried to stretch
them out by wearing them.
Painful.
Don't do that.

And then the wide world web came to my rescue.
What did we do before the Internet?

I filled freezer bags 1/3 full and placed one in each shoe
and then stuck them in the freezer.
As the water turns to ice,
it expands and stretches out the shoe.

Just leave them in the freezer overnight.
Take the shoes out in the morning and let the ice thaw
before taking the bags out.
Try them on.
If they are still too tight,
you can repeat the process.

I only had to do this once.
And now they fit like a glove.
If I wore a glove on my foot.
Which I don't.
Yet.
But really, we all know it's just a matter of time.

OUCH!!!

My back aches from being pulled off my high horse.
Being inaccurate should be so easy and comfortable for me,
considering I spend an awful lot of time there.

But every single time that I pack my bags and start my long,
smug journey to Righteoustown,
I veer off course,
fall off the map,
and end up where all my long-winded rantings
eventually drop me off.

Wrongsville.

So here I sit once more.
Dumbfounded.
Trying to figure out how I got here.
I was so sure this time that I would end up at my planned destination.

The only thing that makes me feel better
is that this time,
Brian came with me.
I almost can't believe that we shared this ride.
Brian is never wrong.
I'm saying it again.
Brian is NEVER wrong.
And that's not sarcasm.

We were both so sure.

And we were both so wrong.

Yup.
Same couches.

Lighting does make a big difference
and apparently,
we live in a cave.

We went back to La-Z-Boy yesterday
and looked at the showroom couches again.

And they were darker than we remembered.
And the numbers on the tags matched.
We just looked at each other and laughed.

My only comfort is knowing that the next time
I travel down that winding road,
it will be from the comfort of my new
uber cushy dark brown La-Z-Boy reclining loveseat.

Look Here, Then Look There, Then Look Here Again.

Look Here:
And Here:
And then Look Here:
And then Here:

Hmmmmmmmm.
Do you see anything strange with these pictures?

Let me help you .

I was sure they delivered the wrong furniture.
The set at the LazyBoy Showroom was a light tan.
My set is a darkish brown.

Now, I'm not stupid, I know lighting plays a big role in
how colors may appear different in different settings.

This is not the case.
My set is DARK!

As soon as the men carried it in I said,
"Whoa!  Wrong Set."

They checked the invoice.
We checked the order.
I called the showroom.
Everyone swears that my set
is the same color as the set in the showroom.

Everyone is a liar.

There is nothing removable on this furniture,
like a pillow or an armrest cover
that I can take with me and show the sales people.

My daughter was just here and she agrees that
this is a different color than the one we ordered.

And I made her look at the couch,
then look at the photo of the showroom couch,
then look at our couch,
then look again at the photo.

And back and forth.
Over and over again.
Until she refused to talk to me about couches anymore.

She did say that the ones we have will not show dirt
as easily as the others.
This is true.
And I'm not really hating them.
I'm kinda liking them.
And my husband is dirty.
So I'm thinking I might keep them.

But I still feel the need to show everyone that I'm not crazy.
And I'm thinking I might just carry one of the recliner ends
back into the showroom with me
and prove to them I'm right.

And then they will try to exchange it.
And I will tell them,
"That's ok, I've decided to keep it."

That's Right!
Who's crazy Now?

Did you Know?

Did You Know?
That I don't have a key to my own house?
I always use the garage door opener.
If we have a power failure,
I fear my butt will become trapped in the doggie door.

Did you Know?
That my Dear Sweet Redneck husband
who has no idea how to use the Internet
has finally talked me into getting Smart phones?
And that last night he downloaded an app
for Fart Sounds?

Did you Know?
That I miss Jack in the Box Cheesecake?
And that it misses me?

Did you Know?
That Weight Watchers is going really well?
I'm loving it.
It's just almost too easy.
Eat what you want,
when you want,
in the right proportions.
No problem.

Today I was in the mood for pizza
and didn't want all the points from
a delivery pizza so I made my own.

Turkey pepperoni and mushroom
on flat bread.

Did you Know?
That there is a new app
for scanning bar codes
with Weight Watchers and it
automatically gives you the points?

I scanned the bar codes on these:
1 flat bread = 1 point
1/4 cup mozzarella = 2 points
1/4 cup pizza sauce = 1 point
Turkey Pepperoni = 1 point
Mushrooms = 0 points

Total = 5 points plus

Did you Know?
That if you're not on Weight Watchers
that you don't care about any of that?
I care though.
Down 12.5 lbs so far.
Loving that!

Did you know?
That my couch smells like this?
Did you Know?
That I am having a really hard time
coming up with blog material lately?

Did you Know?
That my sissy is coming all the way
from Florida to visit
and is staying with me for 3 whole nights?
I can't wait to have her all to myself for
three whole days!
What should we do?

Did you Know?
That I've missed you all?

When Mormons Attack

I met these strange people for lunch today.
Laraine, Me, Jo, and Roe.

"Hey Waitress with the massive quantity of eyeliner!
Four Diet Cokes over here please and keep them coming!"

These women are a hoot to be around.
We laughed all through lunch.

We took several pictures.
We decided to be cute in one of them.
Sexy in another.
Flirtatious in another one.
Not sure which shot that above photo was
but Jo was all three at once.
Don't you agree?

At one point, these three women started talking about Wards
and other Mormon terms that I wasn't familiar with.
I started singing,
One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong!"

It was Laraine's first time meeting bloggers.
I hope we didn't scare her off.
We loved her.
She is much smarter than I but didn't make me feel bad about it.

Roe had us cracking up telling us a story
about the crazy old woman who lives next door to her
and believes that Roe is trying to kill her with
the wood chips in her front yard.

I so hope Jo and I didn't scare them off.
We tend to do that.

Jo came home with me and met Brian who was
made to suffer from our lunch out
by having to make his own bologna sandwiches for lunch.
He survived.

Let's do this next month!!
What do you say?

Right Now

Please forgive me for the random pictures.
I'm still figuring out my camera situation.

Right now I’m loving... the smell of my pineapple cilantro candle.
Sounds strange but oh so good.

Right now I’m reading...Dawn on a Distant Shore by Sara Donati.
Loved the first one in her series too!

Right now I’m waiting for... the sun to come up
so I can start cleaning the carpet in the guest bedroom.

Right now I’m excited about...
Heading out to look for lamps at the thrift store.

Right now I’m missing...
my mom, as always.

Right now I’m trying... to stop drinking so much coffee
so I don’t have to pee so often.

Right now I’m enjoying... watching reruns of
“The New Adventures of Old Christine”. I just love her!

Right now I’m snacking on...
an apple with reduced fat peanut butter slathered all over it.

Right now I’m using... Exuviance liquid foundation from Ulta.
The Bare Minerals were just too drying for my oldish skin.
It's very light but gives me the coverage that I need.

Right now I’m wearing... A long sleeve thin gray t-shirt
with a sweatshirt over it,my snowman pajama bottoms
and moccasins. Yup, I’m a hot mess.

Right now I’m planning...what to do when my sister gets here
from Florida in March! Woo Hoo!!

Right now I’m needing... a new bra.
You know how I hate bra shopping too!

Right now I’m learning... that sarcasm is not cute.
Not that I could stop it even if I wanted to.

Right now I’m listening to...
Good Morning Arizona in the background. So much violence.

Right now I’m wishing...
I were losing weight more quickly.

Right now I’m praying for...my Dad’s health.
He’s dealing with quite a bit of pain right now.

Right now I’m dreaming of...
going on another Alaskan cruise. It’s been too long!

What are you doing right now?

Wonderful Wednesday

Can we talk about this here empty cup?
I love Yoppi Frozen Yogurt.
I had the fat-free
sugar-free
boysenberry with fresh
raspberries and strawberries.
It was delightful.
I ate the whole thing an hour ago.
I'm ready for another please.

On another note,
I won something.
Dina blogs over at
I love the name of her blog.
She held a giveaway for digital scrap booking software.

I won it and downloaded it this morning
but haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
Thanks again, Dina.
Winning is so much better than not winning!

Again, on another note,
(there may be many notes)
I'm going through my closet and sorting through
my fall/winter clothes.
And I've come to this revelation.
I have no idea how to dress.
I didn't get the fashion gene.
I don't know how to put an outfit together.
They should do garanimals for the 40 somethings.

Yet another note,
have you seen the weather here in the devil's playground
that we call Phoenix?

Ok, forget what I said
about not having any fashion sense.
I look totally hot in that red dress.

Ok, last note.
I saw a tutorial this morning on this blog.
I had no idea that the box at the top of our blogs
were search boxes for the blogs we are on.

Example:

If you are on my blog and want to find
all the posts where I mention the word "cookies",
then just type in the word "cookies" up there and
it searches my blog and gives you those posts.
All 10,000 cookie posts.

Or if you are looking for the post where I talked
then you could just type in "New York"
and all posts with New York in them will pop up.

You probably knew that huh?
Well, I didn't and I can tell you that
I have spent a lot of time searching through archives
on other's blogs looking for something
in particular.

I think I'm now out of notes.

Crow Tastes Ok with Some Cranberries Thrown In.

I'm a nice person.
We all know that, right?

I mean, I can practically hear you all saying,
"Oh Holly?  Why she's a lovely girl!  Such a sweet nature."
You're kinda saying that in your head right now, huh?

So this might be a little hard to believe.
Yesterday,
I was an Ass Head to someone.
And
it was someone I didn't know.

I know, right?

It all started with a phone call.
I got totally riled up.
I felt all hot and sweaty.
I just felt like being a huge idiot.
And I yelled at the State Farm Insurance Dude.
He wasn't even my agent.
We'd never met.
And he was asking perfectly reasonable questions
and I wanted to kill him.
º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤ºWELCOME MENOPAUSEº¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º

And you know what that guy had the nerve to do?
He got nicer.
And I calmed down.
And then I asked him for a quote.
Home, Boat, and Auto.
And he called me back with an amazing deal.
So much better than what we had.

So what do you think I did?
Come on...you know me by now.
What did I do?
I baked him orange cranberry cookies.
Because that's what I do these days.
I bake cookies.
And then I put them in a container
and gave them to him.

And it's all good now.

Cooling off and Chickadees

It's quite possible that
Autumn is approaching Arizona.
The temps dip down in the low 70's in the early mornings
and the days are now in the 90's
which is really quite lovely.

I've been doing a little more of this
And I made some homemade marinana
with lots of mushrooms and fresh basil
and froze it in batches.

I received a large envelope in the mail yesterday
and was thrilled to see it was from Laurie.
Laurie blogs over at "How My Time Flys".
Her story is amazing and so inspiring.
She is an extremely talented painter.
She finally got up the nerve to open her Etsy Shop
and I was very excited to be one of her first customers.
I've always loved her paintings of the Chickadees
so that's what I decided to get.
I just love it so much and am planning
on finding a frame for it today.
Visit her Etsy Shop and see
what she has to offer, if you get a chance.
Tell her Holly says "Hiya!"

Lazy Weekend and Simple Mindedness

I'm pretty simple.
and I'm okay with that.

It doesn't take much to keep me entertained.
This is what we will be doing this weekend.
And some of this.

And I baked this banana bread.

But it's not these things that I'm referring to
when I tell you that I'm simple.

I'm also simple-minded.
There are so many things
out there that I don't understand.

Like, how does this billboard sell more storage units?

And how does this ad sell more jeans?

Have a great weekend!

Let's Learn Together

Let's face it, times, they are a changin'.
It's hard to keep up.

Do you find yourself thinking,
"What did she just say?"
"That makes no sense!"
"I don't get it."

It may be that you simply haven't spent
enough time studying the urban dictionary.

It's important to stay informed.
Even if it's only to know what our kids are saying about us.
I'll help you get started by showing you some of the new phrases
that have been recently added.

Text Purgatory
The time period one waits for a response to a flirtatious text.

Webtrovert
Someone who is a shy introvert in real life,
but turns into a full-on extroverted party animal
on Internet forums and social sites.

Curb Shame
Embarrassment at waiting on the curb obediently
as other pedestrians ignore the "don't walk" signal in the absence of traffic.

aarping
When an elderly person, such as yourself,
complains incessantly about nothing.

Caller VD
When your caller ID identifies someone
with whom you definitely don't want to talk,
and you avoid answering them like the plague

ProcrastinEating
The consumption of food undertaken to avoid
a dull or arduous task, irrespective of hunger levels or the time of day.

Cold Finger
Similar to cold shoulder, except a cold finger is done by
ignoring someone's text or facebook message--
usually when said person's comment is pointless or uncalled for.

Screen Saver
the blank expression that comes across a person’s face
when day dreaming.

Geriatric Bypass
The act of denying your actual age in order to give
others the impression that you are younger.

Peegret
The regret you experience when you leave home hastily
without relieving yourself.

Postmodem Depression
The feeling you get when you haven't had access to the internet
(i.e. facebook and twitter) for a long time, like several minutes.

Immaculate Congestion
When traffic is backed up for miles on a highway,
crawling along -- and then suddenly everyone returns
to normal high speeds without passing an
accident, stalled car, or road construction.

Moviegating
To follow any type of car for any period of time
to watch the tv inside of the car.

Let's all try to use some of these in our every day conversations.

The Post Where Bev Puts Her Toe In The Water But Doesn't Get Wet

Remember my Blurry Friend Bev?
The one from yesterdays post?
Yup, that's her.

I've been telling her for months that she needs her own blog.
And she's been refusing.
She's been CANTANKEROUS.

can·tan·ker·ous/kanˈtaNGkərəs/
Adjective: Bad-tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative.

Ok, maybe not Bad-tempered but definately uncooperative.
So I figured it might be a good idea to have her guest post on my blog
so she can see what the deal-ee-o is all about.

I would like to say that I do not agree
with her account of the email conversation
that she claims we had.

She makes me sound completely controlling.
I KNOW!
Hard to believe, even though Jan
called me Miss Bossy Socks in the comments yesterday.

So, Bev did a guest post for me.

And here it is:

A few months ago, when Holly and I “met”,
she told me to start a blog.
I gave her a whole list of reasons why that isn’t a good idea -thought that was the end of it.
Evidently I underestimated her determination because
yesterday I clicked on her blog and found my picture and her version of the truth.

And then you nice people completely overwhelmed me
with the kindest (and funniest) words ever.
Holly sent me a note last night telling me that if I’m not going to blog,
then it was up to me to explain it to you wonderful people
who had taken time out of your day to encourage me,
because she is washing her hands of the whole affair.

She also said that I should include pictures in my explanation,
otherwise blog posts are boring.
And she has standards.
But I’m no photographer (also on my list of reasons I can’t blog),
so I’ll just include pictures I’ve saved of stuff I want from Pottery Barn.

So…here goes…written in Holly-style formatting…

Why I can’t blog. Reason #1:

I FOLLOW quite a few blogs.
In fact, I may have a serious addiction to decorating blogs.
I used to FOLLOW many more than I do now.

Several months ago I noticed a disturbing trend in a few of these blogs.
People who probably wouldn’t even open the door to a stranger,
were having major, life-changing, hormonal breakdowns on their blogs.
Sometimes with hundreds of followers along for the ride.
I’m not talking about a bad day or a bad week here and there.
But day after day and week after week of telling all their business.

In detail.

Naming names.

Filters had left the building, y’all.

One week they were demonstrating chalk paint methods
and decoupage in their picture-perfect homes
and the next week we hear that their husband
is a low-life, scumbucket s.o.b. who never appreciated
a single thing they ever did even after I bore his enormous children
and I should have known better because
I’ve always thought his eyes were too close together
and what did I expect after I met that cold controlling witch
who called herself his mother and last night I dreamed
that I was flying away on a cloud and he and his
whole trashy falling-down-drunk family
were stranded on a desert island and I was blah blah blah blah

Oh my word.

Somewhere around the third day of this,
the tone of their posts would change.
Instead of focusing on the low-life scumbucket, you, the follower, became the focus:

“You’re going to leave me – my followers!
This is too much! You’re all going to leave me just like everyone else.
I just know that’s what you’re thinking. I just know it!”

Although I hadn’t been thinking that, now it’s all I can think about.

It’s just like that situation with the boyfriend in the 11th grade all over again.
The one you found out too late was needy and had no self-confidence.
Who took everything as a sign you were about to break up with him.
“Just like every girlfriend before you”, he would whine.
For the first dozen or so times he brought it up, you sweetly reassured him.
Eventually you started wondering if he didn’t have something there.
And then you started trying to figure out
exactly when you could gnaw your arm off to get out of the trap.
And you felt really bad about it, because he gave you that cool 8-track player for Christmas.

Or a kidney.

But you did it anyway. And you still feel like crap about it.

So for days, my finger would hover over the UNFOLLOW button
until one day I could resist no longer.

It’s the 11th grade all over again.
So how does this relate to anything? I’ll tell you how.

Filters. And hormones.

Or lack of both in my case.

Make me afraid to blog.

Suppose I start a blog and then I end up in the midst
of one of those downward emotional spirals that happen to all of us?
I mean, who hasn’t told too much of their business to
50 or 75 of their closest friends at one time or another?
You know.
Like telling about the time your brand new husband
“forgot” Valentine’s Day,
then panicked at the last minute and ran out
at 7:00 p.m. and bought you a waffle iron for crying out loud?

That time.

(totally fictitious example)

But this blogging stuff is a whole different ball of wax
than sobbing uncontrollably on the shoulders of your girlfriends
and the stranger in the waiting room at the oil change place.

Suppose I started a blog and that totally fictitious situation
happened right after I just got my 999th follower
and Pottery Barn had just signed on as my sponsor?

And suddenly instead of giving you tutorials
on how to make completely useless non-absorbent linen dish towels,
I’m giving my family all the evidence
they’ll need for my (in)competency hearing …
documented in my very own words on a blog.

Lack of filters, lack of hormones and a public forum. A really bad combo.

And this is just one of the reasons I can’t start a blog.
